The You-S-A-Project was produced with my friend and fellow photographer, Dominique Laugé, in 1984, in Los Angeles.
We positioned a light gray paperbackdrop and a 4x5 camera on the boulevard of Venice Beach. Passers-by were asked spontaneously whether they would like to pose for a picture as part of an art project. The response was very positive.
At the moment of exposure everyone had to look into the lens and say the word „You“. The way this was done remained completely up to the person in front of the camera.
We photographed on black and white film with the given daylight in open shade. It took us two days to photograph far more than 100 people. From this material we made a selection of 101 portraits, which we printed on silverbrome paper.
The project was later shown in various european galleries.
